I sometimes do a similar mental exercise during meditation. I basically use the macrocosmic orbit to draw attention to my breath and body. The first pass, I try to pay attention to drawing from the extremities in to the dantian on the inhale and expanding from the mingmen back to the extremities on the exhale. Then I reverse the focus (inhale focus on mingmen to extremities, and exhale focus on drawing to the dantian). Finally I try to maintain the focus to both the dantian and mingmen during both breathing cycles. If I can maintain my concentration that far, I usually feel more mental clarity and a heightened body awareness.
